Abstract of the session:

Science used to have a clear role in democracies: it provided the facts, while politics added the values, and then some democratic process led to decisions. In many countries that clear authority of science has been eroded during the past decade, as so many other societal institutions lost their hitherto undisputed position. Recent Science, Technology and Society studies (STS) have documented the socially constructed nature of scientific knowledge. Some have erroneously interpreted this as undermining the authority of science. Bijker will present a theory of scientific advise in democracy, that shows how scientific knowledge has a crucial role to play in democracy, while at the same time new forms of stakeholder and citizen participation are called for too.
